Overview

• On July 18, Solano County prosecutors charged 42-year-old Jose Guadalupe Castillo with second-degree murder, shooting at an inhabited dwelling, being a felon in possession of a firearm and committing a felony while on bail.
• The charges follow the death of 45-year-old Courtney Whitney, who was found unconscious with a gunshot wound on the 400 block of Admiral Callaghan Lane and later died at a hospital.
• Castillo was out on bail for a May 3 arrest for willfully discharging a firearm in a grossly negligent manner and unlawful possession of a weapon as a felon.
• Vallejo detectives arrested Castillo inside a convenience store after he attempted to evade officers, recovering a firearm equipped with an extended magazine.
• Investigators are probing a potential road-rage motive and have appealed to the community for tips to fill gaps in the case.
