Overview
- The Cyclone Kiube 300 cyclotron was installed on July 28 in a reinforced bunker 4.5 meters below the Vall d’Hebron research building
- With a price tag of €2.6 million, the 18-ton device will be managed by the Institut Català de la Salut to serve all Catalan public health patients when operations begin
- On-site production will include isotopes such as Zirconio-89, which was previously imported from Amsterdam and suffered from a very short shelf life
- Local synthesis of radionuclides will support real-time PET imaging to accelerate early cancer detection, Alzheimer’s research and treatment evaluation
- The cyclotron anchors the Ciclocat project, integrating clinical services at Vall d’Hebron with translational research at VHIR to develop next-generation radiopharmaceuticals
