Valerie the Dachshund Safely Rescued After 529 Days in Australian Wilderness

The miniature dachshund was captured on Kangaroo Island using scent trails and remote-trigger traps, following an extensive volunteer-led search effort.

Overview

  • Valerie, a miniature dachshund, went missing in November 2023 during a camping trip on Kangaroo Island, South Australia.
  • After 529 days of evading capture, she was safely rescued by Kangala Wildlife Rescue on April 25, 2025.
  • Volunteers dedicated over 1,000 hours and traveled more than 3,000 miles using cameras, scent trails, and traps to locate her.
  • A torn T-shirt worn by her owner, along with her toys and food, successfully lured Valerie into a remotely triggered trap.
  • Valerie is currently in recovery, fitted with an escape-proof harness, and will soon reunite with her owners after a decompression period.
