Overview

  • The Pleno del Consell approved on July 8 a decree law suspending the 2018 compuerta schedule and authorizing continuous sea-lagoon connection once published in the DOGV.
  • Officials will favor compuerta openings Monday through Friday and prevent simultaneous operation of the three golas to limit coastal impacts in coordination with the Junta de Desagüe and Valencia city council.
  • The urgent reform responds to water quality deterioration after October’s Dana and June 2025 temperature spikes up to 32 °C that accelerated algal die-off in the wetland.
  • Researchers at the Universitat de València and other experts have endorsed the measure’s potential to improve water renewal, while environmental NGOs are calling for additional freshwater inputs.
  • The decree also amends Port Law 2/2014 to allow municipalities and administrations to carry out minor port-domain works and extend significant concessions without exclusive occupation.
