Valencian Authorities Send Second Es-Alert as Red-Level Storm Pounds Coastal Comarques

AEMET's red observations and forecast models signal continuing extreme rain that keeps flash-flood risk high.

Overview

  • The Generalitat Valenciana's emergency coordination and Protección Civil issued a second mass Es-Alert to mobile phones for the comarques of la Ribera, la Safor and la Marina Alta with urgent safety orders.
  • The alert tells residents to avoid travel, not cross flood-prone roads or ravines, move to higher ground and avoid basements, garages and elevators if water levels rise.
  • The Safor comarca is the hardest hit with many municipalities reporting more than 100 mm of rain and local hotspots near or above 200 mm in places such as Real de Gandia, Rafelcofer and Benirredrà.
  • AEMET raised a 'rojo observado' after hourly rainfall peaks above 90 l/m² and models show many more hours of intense precipitation over the same area, which sharply increases the chance of rapid river overflows and flash floods.
  • Saturated catchments and heavy urban runoff raise the prospect of fast-onset inundation and infrastructure impacts, so authorities warn people to expect possible road closures and rising river levels while the alert remains active.
