Valencia to Restore Lessons on ETA and Terrorism to Second-Year Bachillerato in 2026–2027

Officials frame the change as a bid to teach recent Spanish history free of classroom ideology.

Overview

  • Education chief Antonio Rovira announced the move on 8 September during the start of the school year in Castelló.
  • Students who began first-year Bachillerato this week will be the first to study the topic in 2026–2027.
  • The content will address terrorism, ETA and the memory of victims and their families, which the conseller links to material removed in 2022 under the Ley Celaá.
  • Implementation relies on modifying the regional curriculum during 2025–2026 and approving a new convivencia decree before the end of 2025.
  • ABC reports that Valencia is currently one of four regions not requiring terrorism in the syllabus, while others such as Madrid, Castilla y León, Murcia and Aragón do.
