Valencia Placed on Red Rain Alert as Towns Suspend Classes

Areas still repairing damage from last October's floods face heightened risk from short, very intense downpours.

Overview

  • Aemet activated a red warning for very heavy rain, forecasting up to 180 liters per square meter in three to four hours with a high risk of sudden flash flooding in low-lying areas, streams and ramblas.
  • Emergency service 112 raised the emergency to red on the coastal north of Castellón and across the Valencia coast, keeping the interior on orange alert.
  • Dozens of municipalities have preemptively suspended Monday classes and closed public buildings in a cascading set of decisions as Cecopal committees meet, including Valencia city (19 centers in flood-prone pedanías), Albal, Torrent, Paterna, Mislata and Chiva.
  • Universities have started to cancel activities, with the Universitat Politècnica de València suspending classes on its Valencia, Gandia and Alcoi campuses and CEU Cardenal Herrera doing the same, while a coordinated decision involving other institutions is expected this afternoon.
  • The regional emergency agency AVSRE urges advance activation of protocols, limited travel and adherence to official guidance, noting that ongoing recovery works from the October 2024 DANA heighten exposure in vulnerable zones.
