Overview

  • The municipal Culture Commission approved adopting a dual-language city name that uses “Valéncia” in Valencian and “Valencia” in Spanish with PP and Vox support.
  • The proposal relies on Article 8 of Decree 69/2017 and a technical study by AVL academic Abelard Saragossà advocating a closed accent.
  • Socialist councilor Nuria Llopis demanded the change be reversed for violating legal procedures and contradicting the Acadèmia Valenciana de la Llengua’s 2017 ruling.
  • Vox abandoned its initial preference for a Spanish-only name to join the PP in backing the bilingual designation.
  • Following the July 15 vote, the measure advances to a July 22 plenary session, a 20-day public consultation and final approval by the Consell de la Generalitat Valenciana.
