Vail Resorts Reports 20% Drop in Skier Visits, Cuts Outlook on Weak Western Snow

The company says performance in the Rockies by Presidents Day will largely determine full-season results.

Overview

  • Through Jan. 4, skier visits fell 20% from a year earlier across Vail’s North American resorts, according to an investor update.
  • Snowfall in November and December ran about 50% below the 30-year average in the West and nearly 60% below in the Rockies, leaving only about 11% of Rocky Mountain terrain open in December.
  • Ski school revenue declined 14.9% and on-mountain dining fell 15.9% compared with the same period last season.
  • Vail lowered its fiscal 2026 earnings outlook and warned results could weaken further if Rockies conditions do not improve by Presidents Day weekend.
  • Vail Mountain recorded a 4.4-inch snowpack, its lowest since records began in 1978, while stronger early-season snow in the East did not offset Western shortfalls.
