V V Rajesh Becomes Thiruvananthapuram Mayor in BJP’s First Corporation Win in Kerala

The vote ends roughly four decades of Left control in the capital’s civic body.

Overview

  • Rajesh secured 51 votes in the 101-member council with support from 50 BJP councillors and one independent, defeating LDF’s RP Sivaji and UDF’s KS Sabarinathan.
  • Two votes cast for the UDF were later declared invalid, and polling in the Vizhinjam ward was postponed, leaving one seat unpolled during the mayoral vote.
  • He took the oath of office after the result, becoming the first BJP mayor in Kerala and the party’s first leader to head a municipal corporation in the state.
  • The BJP controls the corporation with 50 of 101 seats from the December 9 local polls, dislodging the LDF after nearly four decades.
  • Rajesh’s nomination followed internal deliberations that had considered retired DGP R. Sreelekha before the party finalized him following consultations with national leaders, and G S Asha Nath has been named deputy mayor.
