Uzbekistan Completes Center for Islamic Civilization in Tashkent Ahead of 2026 Opening

Built to convene scholarship and cultural exchange, the complex recasts Islamic civilization in a contemporary light.

Overview

  • The finished complex in Tashkent houses the 7th‑century Mushaf of Uthman beneath a 65‑meter dome in a dedicated Hall of the Holy Qur’an.
  • In November 2025 the Center hosted its First International Congress, gathering regional scholars and leaders as President Shavkat Mirziyoyev urged support for a UN resolution on the region’s cultural contribution.
  • Facilities include a 200,000‑book library, a calligraphy school, craft workshops, a restoration laboratory, a children’s museum, and a 460‑seat conference hall.
  • The building hosts offices for international bodies such as UNESCO, ICESCO, IRCICA and the Oxford Center for Islamic Studies to embed ongoing collaboration.
  • Heritage work has returned more than 1,000 rare objects to Uzbekistan and secured roughly another 1,000 manuscripts and artifacts from WOSCU, with the Center preparing for a public opening in March 2026.
