Overview
- A judge at Southwark Crown Court ordered Dawood Safi to be detained in a high-security hospital for an indefinite period rather than sent to prison.
- The knife rampage took place on October 27, 2025, when Safi stabbed his landlord, then fatally attacked dog walker Wayne Broadhurst and injured a 14-year-old boy.
- Safi pleaded guilty to manslaughter on grounds of diminished responsibility for Broadhurst’s death and admitted other charges, while a jury convicted him in July of attempting to murder his landlord and failed to reach a verdict on the charge relating to the teenager.
- Court psychiatrists reported that Safi was experiencing acute psychosis — hearing voices, paranoia and delusions — and the judge found that his mental state was the sole cause of the offending.
- The judge recommended the Home Office consider deportation if Safi is ever released and warned he could spend several years or possibly never be returned to the community, a prospect that Broadhurst’s family said they find distressing.
