The clearance allows a 70,000‑sq ft Velachery campus to offer AI, data‑science, IT and business programmes while connecting students to UWA’s Australian networks.

Overview

  • UWA received final approval from India’s University Grants Commission and began student orientation on October 5, with regular classes scheduled to start on October 19, 2026.
  • The Chennai campus occupies about 70,000 square feet on Velachery Main Road in the One National Park building and will admit the university’s inaugural cohort this month.
  • Programmes will focus on computer science, data science, advanced computer science with AI, information technology and business, including undergraduate degrees and postgraduate options such as an MIT and an MBA.
  • The launch follows UWA’s September opening in Mumbai and is part of the university’s roughly AUD 80 million plan to build wholly owned branch campuses in India.
  • UWA and government leaders in Tamil Nadu and Western Australia said the campus is intended to deepen industry links and skills pathways between the regions and give Chennai students access to internationally recognised UWA qualifications.
