UWA Gets UGC Approval for Chennai Campus

Approval lets the university begin local teaching of tech and business degrees in Chennai, creating direct links between students and industry.

Overview

  • UWA received final approval from India’s University Grants Commission and held a student orientation on Monday, Oct 5, 2026, ahead of the first term.
  • Regular classes at the Chennai campus are scheduled to start on October 19, 2026, with undergraduate and postgraduate cohorts expected to begin then.
  • The campus will deliver degrees in business management, computer science, data science, advanced computer science with AI, a Master of Information Technology, and an MBA.
  • Located on the seventh floor of One National Park in Velachery, the 70,000 sq. ft. site is part of UWA’s roughly AUD 80 million investment in wholly owned Indian campuses and makes UWA the first Australian and first Group of Eight university to gain UGC approval in Tamil Nadu.
  • UWA and regional officials say the campus will offer scholarships and industry connections that could boost local workforce pipelines and deepen education and trade links between Tamil Nadu and Western Australia.
