Uttarakhand ratifies India’s first state Yoga Policy to build global wellness hubs

Grant support for new hill and plain centres alongside a digital platform for standardized instruction highlights the push to boost wellness tourism

Overview

  • The cabinet approved ₹35 crore in funding over five years to implement the policy and expects it to generate more than 13,000 jobs across Uttarakhand.
  • Five world-class yoga hubs are slated for development in Rishikesh, Jageshwar, Mukteshwar, Vyas Valley and Tehri Lake by 2030.
  • Grants covering up to 50% of project costs for new centres in hill areas and up to 25% in the plains aim to spur private investment in yoga infrastructure.
  • Yoga services will become mandatory in all AYUSH health and wellness centres by March 2026, and the practice will be integrated into school and college curricula.
  • A Directorate of Yoga and Naturopathy will be established and a special online yoga platform launched to standardize instruction and oversee certification.
