Uttarakhand Cloudbursts Leave Up to 14 Missing in Chamoli as Search Operations Intensify

Rescue teams face rain, debris and blocked roads that are slowing access.

Overview

  • Overnight cloudbursts in Chamoli’s Nandanagar area buried multiple homes, with official tallies of the missing ranging from five to fourteen as two people were pulled out alive.
  • SDRF and NDRF teams, local administration and PWD crews are clearing debris with JCB machines, and a medical team with three ambulances has been deployed to the site.
  • Uttarakhand officials reported injuries, house collapses and evacuations in affected hamlets, with the Chief Minister citing 20 injured, about 33 homes destroyed and more than 200 people moved to safety.
  • Travel to the hill station of Mussoorie remains disrupted after the Dehradun route was washed out, with roughly 2,500 tourists stranded as engineers install a Bailey bridge at Kolhukhet to reopen access for light vehicles.
  • Authorities have issued weather alerts for heavy rain, and the state says restoring damaged roads, bridges and power lines—over ten of which were hit, five severely—remains a priority.
