Uttar Pradesh to Set Up ATS Field Unit in Sambhal, First for Moradabad Zone

Police frame the move as a response to a panel report on last year’s deadly unrest.

Overview

  • Superintendent Krishan Kumar Bishnoi announced that an Anti-Terrorism Squad field unit will be established in Sambhal.
  • The planned site is near the Shahi Jama Mosque at Satyawrat Police Station, with a parcel of land already demarcated for the facility.
  • The decision follows submission of a three-member panel’s report to Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on the November 2024 violence that left four people dead.
  • Officials referenced Sambhal’s history and alleged links involving AQIS, SIMI, Indian Mujahideen, Harkat Ul Mujahideen and ISIS when explaining the need for the unit.
  • IANS reported this will be the first ATS field unit in the Moradabad Zone, with existing bases in Meerut, Saharanpur and Noida, and cited intelligence views that the 2024 unrest showed signs of orchestration with possible AQIS influence on encrypted platforms.
