Uttar Pradesh Orders Mass Push on Check Dams and Ponds to Tackle Water Stress

Officials cite earlier check‑dam gains to claim fewer over‑exploited groundwater zones.

Overview

  • Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath directed departments to turn construction and restoration of check dams, ponds and blast coupes into a people‑driven campaign modeled on the ‘Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam’ effort.
  • Rainwater harvesting will be mandatory for buildings larger than 100 square metres across the state, according to the directive.
  • The government reports 6,448 check dams have been built, creating irrigation potential for 1.28 lakh hectares and recharging more than 10,000 hectare‑metres of groundwater annually.
  • Since 2022–23, officials say 1,002 check dams were de‑silted and 1,343 of 16,610 ponds were redeveloped; between 2017 and 2025, 6,192 blast coupes were built to irrigate 18,576 hectares.
  • Orders include a free clay‑collection window for potters from April 1 to June 15, use of ponds for fish farming and water chestnut cultivation to support jobs, photographic documentation of all structures and district‑level awareness drives on social media.
