Uttar Pradesh Orders All Post-mortems Be Done Within Four Hours

Officials are mobilizing extra medical teams, vehicles, online reporting tools to enforce the four-hour autopsy deadline across the state.

  • Uttar Pradesh has formally issued guidelines mandating that all post-mortems be completed within four hours of a body’s arrival at any facility.
  • Videography is now compulsory in custodial deaths, police encounters and other sensitive cases including women’s deaths within 10 years of marriage with costs covered by the Rogi Kalyan Samiti.
  • Chief medical officers must deploy multiple doctor teams and maintain at least two dedicated vehicles per district to ensure timely transfers and examinations.
  • Night-time autopsies in murder, suicide, sexual-offence or suspicious cases require district magistrate approval and a minimum 1,000-watt lighting setup.
  • Protocols now require a female doctor on panels for cases involving female victims and mandatory DNA sampling for unidentified bodies with online issuance of reports.
