Uttar Pradesh Deploys AI, GPS and Drone Network to Curb Illegal Mining

A new statewide network of automated checkpoints alongside real-time monitoring aims to boost transparency, setting a template for other states

They are used to measure the length, width, and depth of mining sites. This helps the government know exactly how much mining has taken place. (For representation only)

Overview

  • The state has activated 57 AI and IoT–enabled weigh-in-motion gates that automatically detect overloaded mining vehicles
  • AIS-140 GPS devices installed under the Vehicle Tracking System now deliver real-time tracking, route-deviation alerts and detailed operational reports
  • Satellite imagery and mapping tools such as Google Earth, ArcGIS and LISS-IV data are used to pinpoint illegal extraction sites and identify untapped mineral zones
  • Drones perform volumetric measurements of mine pits and stockpiles to ensure accurate lease compliance and resource accounting
  • Over 21,477 vehicles have been blacklisted and transporter registration has been introduced to reinforce accountability, with other states observing the model for potential adoption
