The IMD warns dense fog will persist through January 5 with a significant risk of transport disruption across the state.

Overview

  • Chief minister Yogi Adityanath ordered a statewide shutdown for classes from primary to 12 across ICSE, CBSE, UP and other boards until January 5.
  • Officials were directed to stay on alert, conduct field inspections, distribute blankets, arrange bonfires, prevent outdoor sleeping, and ensure full readiness at night shelters.
  • The IMD forecasts dense to very dense fog during night and early morning hours through January 5, with January 2–4 flagged for likely disruption to road, rail and air movement.
  • Visibility dropped to near zero at multiple locations including Gorakhpur, Kushinagar, Prayagraj, Kanpur and Azamgarh, while Lucknow, Varanasi, Ayodhya and Ghazipur recorded about 50 metres.
  • Minimum temperatures are running more than 5°C below seasonal norms at some places, increasing early-morning and night-time cold stress.
