Uttar Pradesh Cabinet Approves UK Scholarship, Private University Expansion and Governance Overhaul

Formal ordinances will operationalise the new universities as the scholarship scheme prepares to launch in 2025-26.

Overview

  • Cabinet approved the Bharat Ratna Atal Bihari Vajpayee-Chevening Uttar Pradesh State Government Scholarship Scheme in partnership with the UK’s FCDO to fully fund one-year master’s degrees for five meritorious students annually from 2025-26 through 2027-28.
  • Clearances were granted for Vedanta University in Muzaffarnagar, KD University in Mathura and Bodhisattva University in Barabanki under the 2019 Private Universities Act, pending operational licences.
  • The Uttar Pradesh Private Universities Ordinance, 2025 will be promulgated to officially include the new institutions under the Act and issue their licences.
  • An amendment to Section 305 of the Municipal Corporation Act will extend advertising licence validity from two to fifteen years to boost investment and simplify renewals.
  • Insertion of Section 24 in the King George’s Medical University Act will reserve executive council seats for senior professors from SC/ST and OBC communities to enhance inclusive governance.
