Overview

  • Implementation will roll out in three phases: smart and metro areas from 2025–27, cities over 100,000 population by 2027–30, and all municipalities after 2030.
  • The policy adopts a three-level approach at city, neighbourhood and building scales to integrate green belts, pocket parks, rooftop gardens and low-emission zones.
  • A Green City Monitoring System will rate cities with ‘Green Star’ labels based on environmental efforts, culminating in an ‘Ultimate Green City’ award.
  • Funding will come from AMRUT 2.0, the National Clean Air Programme, finance commission grants and urban bodies’ own resources.
  • Tree-planting drives, green fairs and workshops will engage the public to drive awareness and participation in urban greening initiatives.
