Uttar Pradesh Bans Caste-Based Rallies, Removes Caste Markers From Police Records and Public Spaces

Issued to implement a recent Allahabad High Court ruling, the order takes immediate effect with exceptions only where law requires recording caste.

Overview

  • Police must delete caste fields from FIRs, arrest and seizure memos, and station notice boards, and leave the CCTNS caste column blank until the NCRB removes it.
  • Identification formats will now include the mother’s name alongside the father’s or husband’s in place of caste entries.
  • Vehicles displaying caste names or slogans will be challaned under the Motor Vehicles Act, and signboards declaring areas as caste territories must be removed.
  • Caste-based political rallies and public displays have been prohibited, with authorities directed to act against caste-glorifying content on social media under the IT Rules, 2021.
  • The Home Department and DGP have been told to amend SOPs and police manuals for enforcement, as the Samajwadi Party labels the move political ahead of the 2027 polls.
