Uttar Pradesh Bans Caste-Based Rallies, Removes Caste From Police Records

The move implements a High Court directive against caste disclosure in policing.

Overview

  • A 10-point order issued late Sunday directs deletion of caste entries from FIRs, arrest and seizure memos, police noticeboards and the CCTNS, with fields left blank until NCRB updates, while allowing disclosure only where law requires it such as under the SC/ST Act.
  • Police records will now include the mother’s name alongside the father’s or husband’s for identification.
  • Citing threats to public order and national unity, the state has prohibited caste-based political rallies, a step not specifically mandated by the Allahabad High Court.
  • Vehicles displaying caste names or slogans will be challaned under the Motor Vehicles Act, and caste-glorifying signboards or claims over ‘caste territories’ must be removed.
  • Authorities will monitor social media for caste-glorifying or hate content and update SOPs and police manuals to enforce the policy, as the Samajwadi Party criticises the move as politically motivated.
