Uttar Pradesh Assembly Unanimously Approves Pay Hike for Lawmakers and Ministers

Effective April 1, the law introduces higher salaries with expanded allowances, ties future pay reviews to the cost inflation index every five years, increasing annual expenditures by about ₹105.63 crore.

  • The Uttar Pradesh Assembly unanimously passed the UP State Legislature Members and Ministers Amenities (Amendment) Bill, 2025 on August 14, concluding the monsoon session.
  • Under the revision, ministers’ basic salary will climb from ₹40,000 to ₹50,000 per month, and MLAs/MLCs from ₹25,000 to ₹35,000.
  • Legislators will receive additional monthly allowances totaling ₹67,750, while ministers will get ₹77,750 extra, covering constituency, secretarial and medical allowances.
  • The amendment raises family pensions from ₹25,000 to ₹30,000 per month and adds incremental pensions for former council members, plus boosts annual travel benefits for ex-legislators from ₹100,000 to ₹150,000 with unused amounts convertible.
  • Effective retroactively from April 1, the law ties future pay reviews to the cost inflation index every five years and is projected to add roughly ₹105.63 crore annually to the state exchequer.
