Uttar Pradesh Assembly Launches AI Camera Pilot After MLA Training Workshop

AI-enabled cameras are now identifying legislators for attendance tracking with speech analytics, prompting MLAs to demand clearer data governance rules.

Overview

  • Speaker Satish Mahana and IIT experts began a Monsoon Session pilot deploying facial-recognition cameras to identify MLAs, log attendance and record speech content.
  • A handbook titled “AI-Driven Governance for Legislators” was released outlining use cases from voice-to-text and multilingual translation to policy comparison, dashboards and chatbots.
  • Technical leads Harshit Mishra and Ashutosh Tiwari demonstrated rapid archival search and automated policy analysis tools as part of a phased roll-out aimed for full deployment in the Winter Session.
  • Over 200 MLAs who attended the 90-minute workshop raised questions on data accuracy, privacy safeguards, ethical oversight and the risk of surveillance-style monitoring.
  • Legislative leaders have scheduled a Vision 2047 debate to run alongside the pilot and will clarify governance policies for the AI systems before their wider implementation.
