Overview
- The 24.25-km sea bridge with three approach connectors is designed to ease congestion between Mumbai’s northern suburbs, Vadhavan port and major expressways.
- Environmental conditions mandate creation of a 10.8-hectare compensatory mangrove patch and the planting of 52,000 new trees to offset coastal habitat loss.
- Construction will affect 15.39 hectares of mangrove forest and 2.5 hectares of reserved forest, requiring diversion of pipelines and relocation or felling of 9,075 trees.
- Project costs have been optimized to ₹52,652 crore through design revisions and land-use efficiencies, with 72 percent funded by JICA loans and the balance by the state and MMRDA.
- Following Union MoEF&CC approval, detailed project reports will be finalized and a special purpose vehicle formed to kick off construction.
