Utah Valley University to Add 8 Police Officers and 2 Safety Managers After Charlie Kirk Shooting

Funding for the new positions remains unspecified.

Overview

  • UVU says it is hiring eight officers and two safety managers following the Sept. 10 killing of Charlie Kirk, and Tyler Robinson has been charged with aggravated murder and awaits trial.
  • An Associated Press review found no bag checks or metal detectors, no drone monitoring of rooftops, and no coordination with local police for the roughly 3,000-person outdoor event.
  • Only six campus officers staffed the debate, while Kirk had an eight-person private security detail, according to Chief Jeffrey Long.
  • The department reported 23 officers in 2024 and projects just over 30 after the hires, still well below the roughly one-per-500 student ratio cited by a 2024 DOJ study.
  • The campus police budget is $2.1 million for the fiscal year that began Oct. 1, and university officials have not said how the new positions will be funded.
