Utah Under Flood Watch as Priscilla Remnants Drive Heavy Rains With Mountain Snow Ahead

Flash flooding is expected in popular parks across southern Utah.

Overview

  • The National Weather Service says a Flood Watch remains in effect for central, eastern and southern Utah through Saturday evening.
  • Deep tropical moisture from the remnants of Hurricane Priscilla delivered heavy, variable downpours Friday, including 2.6 inches at Boulder Summit and other significant totals across the south.
  • Risk is listed as expected or probable at Zion and Lake Powell as well as Arches, Bryce Canyon, Canyonlands and Capitol Reef, with officials urging people to avoid slot canyons, dry washes and flooded roads.
  • A cold front late Saturday is forecast to intensify storms and drop snow levels to roughly 6,000–6,800 feet Sunday morning, with 3–6 inches possible at the highest Wasatch and Uinta peaks before drier air arrives by afternoon.
  • Cities and counties have pre-positioned sandbags and equipment and warned that burn scars near Pine Valley and Old La Sal heighten debris flow hazards, while desert and backcountry roads could become impassable during downpours.
