Utah Tightens Cottonwood Canyon Traction Rules With Pre-Storm Enforcement

A new Class Three standard sets a 5/32-inch tread minimum intended to reduce slideouts.

Overview

  • UDOT can activate traction requirements up to 24 hours before an arriving storm in Big and Little Cottonwood Canyons.
  • During activations, AWD/4WD vehicles must use M+S or 3PMSF tires with at least 5/32-inch tread, while 2WD must run 3PMSF tires or carry chains.
  • Cottonwood Heights and Sandy police will enforce the rules with support from the Salt Lake County Sheriff's Office, and violations can bring fines up to $750 under authority clarified this spring.
  • Flashing signs at canyon entrances and UDOT alerts will indicate when restrictions are active, and vehicles lacking proper traction will not be allowed on the road.
  • A free Cottonwood Canyons Sticker Program offers inspections at more than 140 shops from Nov. 13 through Feb. 28 to pre-verify vehicles for traction checks.
