Utah, TerraPower Sign MOU to Scout Natrium Reactor Sites by Year-End 2025

The nonbinding pact starts a statewide site search focused on locations that can clear NRC hurdles with local backing.

Overview

  • The Utah Office of Energy Development, TerraPower and Flagship Companies signed a nonbinding agreement to identify potential Natrium reactor and energy storage sites, with a preliminary list due by the end of 2025.
  • Site evaluation will consider community support, physical characteristics, prospects for U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission licensing, and access to existing infrastructure.
  • Flagship Companies will provide land and infrastructure data and assist in screening and evaluating candidate locations across Utah.
  • Governor Spencer Cox placed the effort under his Operation Gigawatt plan to expand power supply for a growing regional grid, including nearly $2 million for public outreach.
  • TerraPower’s Natrium is a 345 MWe sodium‑cooled fast reactor with molten‑salt storage that can dispatch up to about 500 MWe, and its first demonstration in Wyoming began construction with power expected around 2030.
