Utah Sheriffs Indicted for Allegedly Interfering in Kouri Richins Prosecution

A judge will decide on Nov. 4 whether to unseal redacted charging material that prosecutors link to an anonymous letter about the case.

Overview

  • A Summit County grand jury returned indictments on Sept. 24 charging Wasatch County Sheriff Jared Rigby with obstruction of justice and a false written statement and former Summit County Sheriff Dave Edmunds with obstruction, and both men have pleaded not guilty.
  • The indictments were publicly unsealed on Oct. 7 but contain heavy redactions, and Rigby and Edmunds have filed motions asking the court to keep narrative sections sealed pending a Nov. 4 hearing on further disclosure.
  • Court filings and reporting say the probe centers on an anonymous letter that accused lead detective Eric Mainord of misconduct, and a defense motion indicates Rigby is accused of sending that letter; Mainord was removed from the state’s witness list and later left a sheriff’s race.
  • Kouri Richins’s lawyers asked to pause their bid for a new trial while the obstruction investigation continues but Judge Richard Mrazik denied that request, leaving both the obstruction probe and Richins’ post-conviction efforts to proceed on separate tracks.
  • The case has produced political and reputational fallout for local law enforcement, the obstruction probe remains active with no public charges yet against other officials named in filings, and the Nov. 4 ruling could shape how much of the grand-jury record the public and defense can see.
