Utah Prosecutors Charge Tyler Robinson With Aggravated Murder in Charlie Kirk Killing, Seek Death Penalty

A judge ordered the 22-year-old held without bond after prosecutors detailed DNA evidence, a note and chat messages.

Overview

  • Robinson faces seven counts, including aggravated murder, aggravated discharge of a firearm causing serious bodily injury, two obstruction counts, two witness-tampering counts and committing a violent offense in the presence of a minor.
  • Prosecutors say DNA linked Robinson to the recovered scoped rifle, a towel used to wrap it and a screwdriver left on the rooftop from which the fatal shot was fired.
  • Charging documents cite a note allegedly left under a keyboard stating he had the opportunity to eliminate Kirk and messages in which he purportedly admitted the shooting.
  • Robinson appeared virtually in court wearing a safety vest, was assigned a public defender, and has a next hearing set for Sept. 29; he remains jailed and is not cooperating with investigators.
  • The case proceeds as a capital prosecution in Utah, where firing squad is an authorized method of execution, and prosecutors have formally noticed their intent to pursue the death penalty.
