Overview
- Nolla Health launched the pilot Monday that authorizes its Nolla Derm app to deliver initial topical acne prescriptions to eligible Utah adults after a short intake and facial scan.
- Users pay $4.99 per month, complete a 10–15 minute questionnaire and face scan, and can receive a treatment plan and prescription within minutes for mild-to-moderate acne.
- The program phases down human sign-off: two physicians pre-approve every prescription for the first 100 patients, physicians review prescriptions retrospectively through the first 500 patients, and then a sample of at least 10% is reviewed monthly.
- Nolla says clinicians agreed with its recommendations in more than 96% of prior real-world cases and that the app has over 175,000 downloads, but those performance claims and the company’s training data have not been independently verified and autonomous initial prescribing currently applies only in Utah.
- The pilot runs inside Utah’s AI Learning Lab sandbox that eases rules for supervised tests, a setup that proponents say could expand access while critics warn it raises safety, liability, oversight, and verification concerns for automating routine medical decisions.
