Utah Launches Court-Ordered Redraw of U.S. House Districts Under Prop. 4 Rules

A GOP-led committee faces a Sept. 25 deadline to release draft maps for public review.

Overview

  • Lawmakers named a ten-member panel led by Sen. Scott Sandall and Rep. Candice Pierucci to produce new congressional boundaries, with Sens. Luz Escamilla and Reps. Doug Owens as the Democratic members.
  • Public meetings are set for Sept. 22 and 24, draft maps will post Sept. 25 for a 10-day comment window through Oct. 5, and a special session to vote is scheduled for Oct. 6 before submission to Judge Dianna Gibson.
  • Under Proposition 4, the map must feature compact, contiguous districts that minimize splitting cities and counties, preserve communities of interest, and exclude partisan voting data.
  • A final court-approved map is required by Nov. 10 to meet 2026 election administration timelines, and only the four U.S. House districts are being redrawn.
  • The Utah Supreme Court declined to pause the schedule, and Forward Party Sen. Daniel Thatcher published an I‑15–based alternative that splits Salt Lake County and says he will submit it in the special session.
