Utah Jury Finds Fugitive Nicholas Rossi Guilty of 2008 Rape as UK Case Is Dropped

He faces sentencing in Utah on October 20 following the CPS ruling that a 2017 Essex rape allegation lacked sufficient evidence.

Overview

  • On August 13, a Salt Lake County jury unanimously convicted 38-year-old Nicholas Rossi of raping his former fiancée in 2008.
  • Rossi, who allegedly used more than a dozen aliases and faked his death in 2020, was identified by tattoos at a Glasgow hospital in December 2021 and extradited to the U.S. in January 2024.
  • In a July 24 letter, England’s Crown Prosecution Service said it could not prove Rossi knew his 2017 Essex accuser did not consent and declined to bring charges.
  • The alleged UK victim, known as Michelle, denounced the CPS decision as victim blaming after contrasting it with the unanimous U.S. verdict.
  • Rossi is due for sentencing on October 20 and faces a second Utah trial in September on another alleged 2008 rape that carries potential life imprisonment.
