UT System to Offer Free Tuition for Families Earning $100K or Less

Starting fall 2025, the University of Texas System will waive tuition and fees for eligible in-state undergraduates across its nine academic institutions.

  • The UT System Board of Regents is expected to finalize the expansion of the Promise Plus program, which will waive tuition and fees for students from families with an adjusted gross income of $100,000 or less.
  • The program applies to full-time undergraduate students who are Texas residents and have applied for federal and state financial aid.
  • An additional $35 million will be allocated to support this initiative, with funding coming from endowment distributions, the Available University Fund, and other system resources.
  • This expansion builds on previous financial aid efforts, including a 2019 endowment at UT Austin and the 2022 Promise Plus program, which provided tuition support at varying income thresholds across UT campuses.
  • Officials estimate that over 7 million Texas families will now qualify for free tuition, with the initiative aiming to reduce student debt and increase college accessibility statewide.
