Overview

  • The board unanimously designated John M. Zerwas and James E. Davis as sole finalists during a telephone meeting on July 21.
  • JB Milliken departed in May to become president of the University of California system, and Jay Hartzell left UT-Austin this summer for Southern Methodist University.
  • A special advisory committee of faculty, staff, students, alumni, community members and two other UT presidents will convene in mid-August to evaluate Davis’s candidacy.
  • Zerwas has served as interim chancellor since May 31 after overseeing health affairs, and Davis has led UT-Austin as interim president since February following his role as chief operating officer.
  • With more than 256,000 students and a $30.9 billion budget, the UT System’s leadership decisions are under intense scrutiny after new state laws limiting faculty input on curricula and campus speech.
