Overview
- Talks held on Thursday between the consellera Esther Niubó and the unions Ustec and CGT ended without an agreement and the teachers’ strike called for the first day of school on September 8 remains in force.
- Niubó told negotiators the department has fulfilled about 96% of the March and May accords and has rolled out a €700 salary supplement for teachers.
- Ustec acknowledged the earlier pacts include positive steps but said they are insufficient and demanded the negotiation process be reopened to address staffing, funding and inclusive-education shortfalls.
- Grassroots Assemblea Educativa de Catalunya has taken a lead role in mobilising centres and a union consultation found 39,502 teachers favour continuing actions, with more than 1,300 schools already joining measures such as cancelling outings.
- If talks do not resume, unions warn the conflict could extend through the school year and trigger further coordinated actions that would disrupt classes and school activities across Catalonia.
