USS New Orleans Fire Off Okinawa Extinguished After 12-Hour Battle

The joint U.S.-Japan response has renewed scrutiny of amphibious-ship readiness.

Overview

  • Flames broke out around 4–5 p.m. local time on Aug. 20 while the ship was anchored near the White Beach Naval Facility in Uruma City, Okinawa.
  • Two sailors sustained minor injuries and were treated onboard, the U.S. 7th Fleet said.
