USS America Returns to San Diego, Ending Six-Year Forward Deployment

The move places the aviation-focused amphib under U.S. 3rd Fleet control.

Overview

  • The amphibious assault ship arrived at Naval Base San Diego on Sept. 25, concluding a forward deployment to Sasebo, Japan and the U.S. 7th Fleet area of operations.
  • While forward deployed since 2019, America led the America Amphibious Ready Group, served as flagship for Expeditionary Strike Group 7, and embarked the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit.
  • In recent Western Pacific operations, the ship took part in Exercise Talisman Sabre alongside 13 other ships and forces from six partner nations, embarking more than 200 multinational participants.
  • The crew validated a new anti-submarine warfare tactic when a 31st MEU MV-22 Osprey delivered sonobuoys from the ship, expanding maritime sensing options.
  • America earned five consecutive Battle Effectiveness awards and provided crisis response, including humanitarian assistance after the Mt. Bagana eruption in Papua New Guinea.
