- On May 19 at about 2 p.m., Amy Hudler was backing a USPS Mercedes-Benz van on the 2000 block of Portsmouth Street when she struck James Hofler as he crossed to check his mailbox.
- Victim James Hofler was an 84-year-old U.S. Navy veteran and longtime Kill Devil Hills resident who died on May 22 after being transferred to East Carolina University Health Medical Center.
- Hudler, a 53-year-old Colington resident, remained at the scene, called for help and fully cooperated with Kill Devil Hills police investigators.
