Overview

  • The USOPC updated its Athlete Safety Policy on July 21–22 and sent formal letters directing national governing bodies to bar transgender women from women’s Olympic events.
  • The policy implements Executive Order 14201, signed in February by President Trump, which prohibits transgender women in female competitions and authorizes withdrawal of federal funds for non-compliance.
  • CEO Sarah Hirshland and President Gene Sykes emphasized that as a federally chartered organization, the USOPC is obligated to follow the presidential directive.
  • Federations overseeing swimming, track and other Olympic sports have been notified to revise their eligibility rules in time for the 2028 Los Angeles Games.
  • This action follows a similar NCAA ban earlier this year and joins over two dozen state laws restricting transgender participation, some of which remain under judicial review.
