USOPC Begins SRY Testing Preparations for U.S. Women’s Ski and Snowboard Teams

The step follows FIS’s new SRY requirement, reflecting alignment with Trump’s executive order.

Overview

  • With roughly 100 days until the Winter Olympics in Italy, the USOPC has started identifying female skiers and snowboarders who must complete SRY gene testing before arrival.
  • USOPC chief medical officer Jonathan Finnoff said the committee is lining up laboratories and options to make the process seamless for athletes.
  • Tests cost about $250 each, the total could reach into the hundreds during qualifying events, and World Athletics has helped offset costs while FIS has not said if it will contribute.
  • The White House praised the USOPC’s steps and defended the “Keeping Men Out of Women’s Sports” executive order that the USOPC directed national governing bodies to follow in July.
  • World Athletics and World Boxing have used SRY testing this year, and IOC president Kirsty Coventry has a working group examining science-based eligibility guidance for the women’s category.
