USNS Charlton Breaks Loose in Baltimore Harbor After Gale-Force Winds

Tugboats hold the 950-foot vessel in position during efforts to reconnect moorings.

Overview

  • The U.S. Maritime Administration said heavy winds parted the ship’s lines on Monday afternoon in South Baltimore’s Locust Point.
  • Tugboats are alongside holding the vessel while crews work to resecure it, and all crew members have been accounted for.
  • Baltimore Fire Boat 1, the U.S. Coast Guard and McAllister Towing responded and brought the drifting ship under control.
  • A portable vehicle ramp on the port side fell into the water and is being recovered, according to MARAD.
  • The roll-on/roll-off cargo ship, transferred to the Ready Reserve Fleet in September, was not on assignment at the time.
