USGS Reports Magnitude 5.2 Quake Off Aleutians With No Tsunami Warning

The offshore shock is the latest sign of North Pacific seismic unrest on the Aleutian megathrust.

Overview

  • The earthquake struck around 1 a.m. local time Tuesday about 122 kilometers south-southwest of Nikolski at a depth of roughly 10 kilometers, according to the USGS.
  • Authorities said no tsunami warning was issued following the event.
  • A magnitude 4.8 aftershock was recorded in the same area less than two hours later, USGS data show.
  • USGS probabilities indicate about a 60% chance of additional magnitude 3 or larger aftershocks near the epicenter this week and roughly a 2% chance of another magnitude 5 or stronger event.
  • The latest quake follows a run of recent activity across the region, including multiple Kamchatka events and a magnitude 7.4 offshore there on September 13, as agencies maintain heightened monitoring.
