Overview
- USCIS says TPS protections granted to Venezuelans in 2021 will end on November 7, 2025 at 11:59 p.m., exposing many to loss of work authorization and possible removal if they lack other relief.
- A narrow cohort retains automatic work authorization through October 2, 2026 only if they re-registered under the January 17, 2025 extension, hold an I-94 expiring October 2, 2026, and filed an EAD renewal received by February 5, 2025.
- The U.S. Supreme Court on October 3 authorized the cancellations to take immediate effect, overriding earlier district court protections in ongoing litigation.
- Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem canceled the 2023 TPS designation for Venezuela on national-interest grounds, and more than 300,000 people lost those protections in April 2025.
- Advocacy groups estimate about 350,000 Venezuelans are at immediate risk and another 250,000 face risk when the 2021 protections lapse, while Justices Sotomayor, Kagan and Jackson dissented from the Court’s emergency action.
