USCIS Publishes Expanded Civics Test, Effective Oct. 20 for New Citizenship Applicants

Applicants who file before Oct. 20 remain on the 2008 version.

Overview

  • USCIS has added 28 questions to the 2008 civics pool, creating a 128-question bank covering U.S. government and history.
  • The exam format is unchanged: officers ask up to 20 oral questions and applicants must answer at least 12 correctly to pass.
  • The updated test applies to Form N-400 filings received on or after October 20, 2025, with earlier filings continuing under the 2008 test.
  • USCIS cautions that some answers can change with elections or appointments and directs applicants to use official sources and current officeholders at the time of the interview.
  • Spanish-language coverage has reproduced the 28 new items to support study, with reminders to verify answers against USCIS guidance.
