Overview
- Most permanent residents should file Form I-90 to renew or replace their card, with October 2025 fees set at US$415 online or US$465 by mail.
- Two-year conditional residents must not use I-90; they are required to file I-751 or I-829 within the 90 days before their card expires.
- The I-90 receipt plus an expired card serves as evidence of status, work eligibility and travel for up to 24 months, with an ADIT stamp available if the card is unavailable.
- CBP warns that absences of one year or more can invalidate the card as a reentry document, so travelers should obtain a reentry permit via Form I-131, which is typically valid for two years, with SB-1 visas needed after longer stays abroad.
- USCIS lists replacement triggers such as expiration within six months, loss, theft, damage, incorrect data or name changes, and notes that very old cards without a printed expiration should be renewed.
